Presentation of the gallery
Galerie Carolyn Heinz was founded in 2005 in Hamburg, Germany. From the beginning, the focus was on drawing and painting, but the spectrum has since expanded to include sculpture and installations. Questioning modes of perception and a thoughtful examination of forms, media, means and intensities of expression are important criteria in the selection of artistic positions.
Gesa Lange's graphite and thread drawings are the focus of our booth presentation. The artist constantly explores the interplay of line and surface and at the same time sees it as an investigation of perception and changes in perception: How is perception shaped by first impressions, visual habits, and rapid categorization? What happens when the layers intertwine and are not clearly separated? What role do light and dark passages play in the observation process?
The other two artistic positions address very similar issues, each in its own way. Gabriele Basch's cut-outs trigger an idiosyncratic spatial play of perception of materiality and immateriality, while Johannes Regin's dotted grid drawings are the result of an intensive confrontation with the materials found and the history inscribed on them.
Presentation of the artist in focus
Gesa Lange works mainly in the fields of drawing and installation, focusing on the basic conditions of artistic activity: time, space, change of state. She also explores the interplay of lines and surfaces. In addition to his graphite drawings, he also makes a large number of wire drawings with textile structures.
Gesa Lange investigates the questions of "before" and "after": How is perception shaped by first impressions, visual habits, and quick classifications? What happens when the levels intertwine and can't be clearly separated? What role do light and dark passages play in the visualization process? Is it not possible, here too, to repeatedly identify changes in perception, to shift and readjust certainties and limits?
All the paths of Gesa Lange's drawings lead to ambiguity. The viewer is torn between the feeling of taking shape and dissolving, of clarity and uncertainty – figures of ambiguity.
Gesa Lange studied fine arts at the HFBK in Hamburg, where she obtained a master's degree in fine arts. His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in Germany and other European countries and is in the public collections of the Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserlautern, the Villa Zanders Art Museum, the city of Katrineholm (Sweden) as well as in the collections of artists' books at the Museum Reina Sofia Madrid, the Museu d'Art Contemporani de Barcelona, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and the Weserburg, Museum für moderne Kunst, Bremen.
Since 2011 she has been a professor of drawing at the HAW in Hamburg. Gesa Lange lives and works in Hamburg.
